MS 1462-3-1: The Standard That Defines Safe Modular Scaffolding in Malaysia

When you’re selecting a modular scaffolding system, one question should be non negotiable: Does it comply with MS 1462-3-1:2011?  

This Malaysian Standard—Metal scaffolding, Part 3: Prefabricated scaffolds, Section 1:  Specification for steel and aluminium modular system scaffolding—is the technical  foundation for safe modular scaffold design and use in Malaysia.  

What MS 1462-3-1 Covers 

The standard provides comprehensive specifications for:

  • Material requirements: Steel and aluminium components, including minimum  thickness, strength grades, and corrosion protection
  • Design principles: Load-bearing capacity, connection mechanisms, and structural  integrity requirements
  • Component specifications: Standards, ledgers, transoms, braces, base plates, and  connectors
  • Testing protocols: How components must be tested to verify performance claims
  • Instruction manual requirements (Clause 9.3): The detailed information manufacturers must provide to users. Clause 9.3 specifies that manufacturers must provide detailed instructions covering assembly, dismantling, inspection, maintenance, load limits, and safety precautions. DOSH’s 2024 order makes this clause mandatory because proper documentation is the foundation of safe use.
